Dissonance Dance Theatre graces the stage of the American Psychological Association’s Minority Fellowship Program 50th anniversary gala at the National Museum of the American Indian. The evening brought speakers from across the United States to honor recipients and scholars – many were Brown and Black psychologists. Dissonance Dance Theatre performers Joel Kioko and Maurissa Powell perform Shawn Short’s timeless duet “The Road” to an enthusiastic crowd.
“We were excited to get the call from Dr. Janice Haskin, Program Director. Once she told me about MFP, DDT shares a similar vision of supporting communities of color and their allies to raise the spirit of our communities through artistic power-building, vocational training, and care.” Says DDT’s Founding Director, Shawn Short.

The Minority Fellowship Program is rooted in psychological science. It breaks down systemic barriers, empowers future leaders from underrepresented communities, and fosters a stronger, more equitable mental health workforce. The program offers financial assistance to help you focus on your studies and research, expert training to develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in your field, dedicated mentoring from experienced professionals who understand your unique challenges and aspirations, and valuable resources and networking opportunities to help you grow personally and professionally.
“I greatly appreciate the mentorship, support, and training provided by MFP. This has allowed me to grow professionally and provided me with security in the face of many challenges.” – MFP Participant
