Netflix utilizes the assistance of the local dance organization Ngoma Center for Dance/Dissonance Dance Theatre to cast its latest production, The Queen’s Ball. Ngoma/DDT Founding Director Shawn Short didn’t think anything of it when he received a call from JP McLaurin – Netflix Casting Coordinator – for their new show in DC. Executive Producers Netflix, Shondaland, and Fever are bringing their Bridgerton series to life with its new show The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience. Ngoma Center for Dance (Ngoma) is becoming a “go to” for local dance talent and creatives. Jp McLaurin requested Short to assist with the show’s casting since Netflix executives wanted the show to be established with local artists, which added to the vitality of the local production.
The casting team found challenges with sourcing local talent. “JP said he searched around but didn’t know where to look for professional dancers in the DC area”, says Shawn Short. “He heard from several people that I would be the best person to speak to about local dance talent.” Through Short’s efforts, Ngoma secured 75 dancer applicants in 72 hours. “ We couldn’t have completed this process without Shawn Short’s assistance,” stated JP McLaurin.

The Show will occur at the Whitfield Entertainment Group Studios at 1235 W St NE, Washington, DC 20018. The show will run Tuesday through Sunday.
Netflix chose Dissonance Dance Theatre alumni Daniel Moore as the production’s principal male dancer.
