Dissonance Dance Theatre (DDT) brings the final show of their 2024 – 2025 season to Atlas Performing Arts Center’s INTERSECTION Festival. DDT celebrates more than ten years of performance at the INTERSECTION Festival and Atlas. This will be DDT’s first DC performance since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
An evening of contemporary ballet to cinematic and pop scores. Dancing between precision and off-balance majesty, X Marks The Spot innovates contemporary ballet counterpoint to human connections, time, and rhythm themes. An evening of athletic dance, Dissonance Dance Theatre brings classical and cinematic musical scores together, creating unforgettable moments for the whole family, featuring dances by African-American Choreographers Kareem B. Goodwin (DDT Resident Choreographer) and Principal Choreographer Shawn Short.
” The show is a collection of dance works centered on pushing the dancer physically and emotionally. This season, I had dancers in the room who wanted to push their classical ballet understanding. They were great inspirations for this season’s repertoire selections. “
– Shawn Short, Founding Director
In the spirit of intersectionality, X Marks The Spot addresses the form of classical ballet against the musical sound familiar to popular moviegoers – finding connections from dance’s regal past to its possible new reality. The dance work asks, “How does ballet fit into a world of TikTok and secular music?” Through investigation, X Marks The Spot provides a “sum” of contemporary ballet that diversifies, entertaining today’s theatre patron and the balletomane through a racially diverse array of music and cast. Dissonance Dance Theatre strives to bring ballet to new audiences through the lens of 2023.
X Marks The Spot will premiere at 8:00 pm on March 2nd, 2024, at Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St NE, Washington, DC 20002).
