Prince George County, Maryland native Shawn Short got his wish – presenting his professional dance company at the historic Publick Playhouse Theater. Shawn Short is the Founding Director and Principal Choreographer of Dissonance Dance Theatre (DDT). DDT presents Up Jump The Boogie, an evening of dance featuring the work of Short and DDT’s Resident Choreographer Kareem B. Goodwin.
According to the PG County Park & Recreation website, “the richly historic Playhouse continues to serve as a popular venue for music and modern dance, musical theater, historical drama, educational programs, and monthly events for seniors. With its ornate sky scene, great acoustics, and plush seating for 494, the theatre is one of the two surviving Art Deco theatres in Prince George’s County since 1947”. DDT’s Shawn Short has dreamed of presenting his company on the same stage as other Black-managed dance companies he admires.

I’ve reached out to staff at the Publick Playhouse for years. But nothing fruitful came from my efforts. After 12 years, an introduction from retired PGC Dance Coordinator Christel Stevens to PP’s current Managing Director Omrao Brown made this a reality. A mixed-bill evening of dance ranging from the timeless beauty of classical ballet to funky jazz, Up Jump The Boogie is a show you don’t want to miss. Featuring the music of classical composer Korngold’s violin concerto, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and more, Up Jump The Boogie is a delight for children and adults alike.
